Traditional Tattoo Bandage Aftercare
How to heal your tattoo with a traditional bandage:
Leave the bandage on until the end of your day, or even until the next morning. If the bandage is slipping, falling off or just uncomfortable you can take it off after 2-3 hours, but only if you are at home and can wash it right away.
After removing the bandage wash the area with with warm water and a fragrance free, dye free soap. Be sure to remove all soap and tattoo residue when you wash it. DO NOT USE A LOOFAH OR ANY SOAPS THAT HAVE SCRUBS IN THEM WHEN WASHING YOUR TATTOO! Keep in mind that some areas like the back and ribs cannot be washed in a sink, so taking a shower is best.
Pat dry the tattoo with a clean towel, or paper towels. DO NOT USE YOUR EVERY DAY TOWEL TO DRY YOUR TATTOO. Allow the area to air dry for 10-15 minutes to make sure all of the moisture is off of the area.
DO NOT RE-BANDAGE.
Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor ointment twice a day for the first day.
After first day continue the washing process but replace the Aquaphor with a fragrance free lotion, something like Lubriderm. Your tattoo will scab like a cut and then begin to flake off. DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH YOUR TATTOO. Allow the scab to come off at its own pace. Exercise at this point is ok, as long as you shower and clean your tattoo immediately after working out.
Do not soak your tattoo! No swimming, no baths, and no jacuzzi.
Keep your tattoo protected from the sun with light clothing while it’s healing.
DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR FRIENDS OR CONSULT THE INTERNET ABOUT TATTOO AFTERCARE.
The healing process normally takes about 2 weeks, but everybody’s body will heal at its own pace so if it takes a little longer it should not be of any cause for concern.
